The easy to operate AquaSentry is ideally suited for use in both urban and rural areas turning unhealthy water obtained from ponds, rivers, wells, town water pipes and many other water sources into pure clean safe drinking water.

The AquaSentry is suitable for many applications including single household supplies, community water systems, bulk water plants, emergency water operations, water kiosk supplies, water for medical facilities, RO and Nano water treatment systems, treatment of town pipe supplies and mobile water plants. It can operate as a single standalone unit or as multiple units manifolded together for supplying large water systems. It always strikes me to see how a small but creative idea can spread spurring those around it to see the world in a new way. Or its ability to influence individuals to engage in positive change. Word Above the Street (The Water Tank Project) is one such idea.

Mary Jordan wants to “draw attention to Water as a precious resource by transforming 300 rooftop water tanks in New York City into works of art”. These works of art will focus on bringing awareness to water scarcity and water sanctity around the world. Professional artists, emergent artists, and youth have been asked to submit art ideas for the tanks.

Positive effects of this social art project will be far-reaching. Over 8.4 million NYC residents, 5 million tourists, and millions of virtual visitors will be able to see the exhibition during the summer of 2012. This may be the first time many of these people have thought about water as an important issue, and – likely – this project may inspire others to further create positive change. Right on, Word Above the Street!

Portland, OR is a hotbed of restoration activities in a highly urban area. Yes, restoration of natural environments can take place in a degraded and lived-in habitat (the big city). Today, I’m attending the 2011 Urban Ecology and Conservation Symposium at Portland State University.

For the first time, I – Water for the Ages – am tweeting from a conference with a focus on topics related to watersheds. Keep on eye on my twitter for updates. This conference is hosted by the Urban Ecosystem Research Consortium of Portland/Vancouver.

“The mission of the UERC is to advance the state of the science of urban ecosystems and improve our understanding of them, with a focus on the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan region, by fostering communication and collaboration among researchers, managers and citizens at academic institutions, public agencies, local governments, non-profit organizations, and other interested groups.”

Pioneer's Discussion Table is the Surface competitor your business can't live without

We’d all like our tables to be a little smarter, and anyone who works for a company would surely like their meetings to have a bit more intelligence, too. Pioneer is hoping to kill two birds with one rather sizeable piece of furniture: the Discussion Table, due sometime next year. Interestingly it’s simply a Core i7-based PC running Windows Embedded Standard 7, with minimal custom coding on top of that. Users can bring their mobile PCs nearby and share documents to the table or remote desktop right into their machines from it, showing their docs and displays in scalable and rotatable windows. The Windows underpinnings handles the multitouch details, also offering what must surely be the biggest virtual keyboard ever seen in the wild. The Table has a single-sheet scanner built in the side and even offers TransferJet, so that everyone can download pictures of Boss’s drunken holiday party antics wirelessly.

Object recognition with OpenKinect

With the release of OpenKinect, an open-source library that lets PC users interact with Microsoft’s depth-sensing and environment-recognizing Kinect, crazy-cool applications of the technology are beginning to emerge. In this video (embedded after the break), one creative hacker mashes together a bunch of open-source libraries to create… well, a modern-day equivalent of HAL 9000.

Using OpenKinect as an interface, OpenCV to process the captured images, CMU Sphinx to recognize speech and Festvox to synthesize speech, one hacker was able to create a program that recognizes random real-world objects and communicates with a user in real time. He notes in the video’s description that it’s just a ‘proof of concept’, but one wonders how long it actually took him to cobble it together because the video was uploaded only a few days after OpenKinect’s release.

The most exciting prospect though, in my opinion, is that Microsoft must surely be working on their own in-house tools (and games!) to better utilize Kinect’s potential. The cocky work of lone cowboy coders is one thing, but next-generation interfaces from powerhouses like Microsoft are something else.

No matter how much you love your iPad, there will always come a time when you feel the need to prop up this hefty tablet while simultaneously giving its audio and battery a little boost. Well, Altec Lansing thinks you do, anyway. Like the $99 SMK-Link PadDock 10 we reviewed not long ago, Altec’s Octiv Stage (or Octiv 450 outside the US) also provides a combo of swivel hinge and speakers for the iPad, but is this $149.95 dock worth the extra money? Read on to find out.

If free Android phones on every US carrier weren’t enough to entice you into a Best Buy Mobile store this month, maybe a deeply discounted Droid Pro will be. Motorola’s Android 2.2 handset, which launched at $179.99 with the usual two-year Verizon tie-in, is now available for purchase for exactly $130 less at Best Buy’s mobile outlets — both the online and brick-and-mortar varieties will let you walk away with one for $49.99 and a 24-month commitment. We don’t know where all these crazy deals are coming from, but we ain’t complaining.

[Thanks, Tony]

Update: Amazon.com is undercutting Best Buy with a $19.99 price for those opening new Verizon accounts when buying the Droid Pro.
